Itinerary
Day 1: Lilongwe - Malawi
Although this is the capital city, it is not large by African standards.
A central curio market is the biggest attraction and this day is reserved
for settling in after your flight.
Day 2: Liwonde National Park
An early start brings us down off the escarpment to the southern edge of
Malawi. Liwonde N.P,310sq.km, has a diverse range of wildlife and 4 of the
big 5. A birders paradise to boot. After setting up camp we spend the rest
of the day game driving.
Day 3: Cape Maclear
After an early morning game drive we then pack up and move north to to Cape
Maclear, within Malawi National Park, the worlds first fresh water lake
National Park (the 7th biggest fresh water lake in the world). The afternoon
can be spent snorkeling, kayaking, or scuba diving. Alternatively, just spending
time on the beach is an option.
Day 4 and 5: Kande Beach
Most probably the best campsite in Malawi offering a variety of accommodation
and activities, scuba diving, horse riding and sailing are just a few options.
A great restaurant for a meal is on site.
Day 6: Sangilo Sanctuary
Our last night on the Lake before we bid Malawi farewell as we head north
to Tanzania.
Day 7: Kisolanza Farm - Tanzania
An early start takes us up the lake to the Tanzanian border where we climb
to 2500m in altitude, staying overnight on a working farm. This brings us
within striking range of Ruaha National Park, certainly one of the best
parks on the southern circuit. At 1800m it is rather chilly in winter but
charcoal braziers in the pub will warm your toes as will the amarula hot
chocolate!!
Day 8 and 9: Ruaha National Park
One of the great parks in East Africa with a high density of elephant. This
park is also the transition zone between east and southern Africa with species
of game from both regions. We will have a lot of time to explore and take
those photos you have been dreaming about.
Day 10: Mikadi Beach - Dar es Salaam
We should arrive late afternoon and experience the organized chaos of a
large African city port. Mikadi Beach is a true beach bar campsite with
a large pool next to the bar should you prefer to not swim in the ocean
or if the tide is out.
Day 11,12, 13: Zanzibar - Unjuga Island
Crossing to Zanzibar by ferry takes around two hours and we then arrive
in Zanzibar city, or Stone Town as it is known. Transfer to our hotel by
shuttle or short walk and then free time to do as much or as little as you
require. Zanzibar has a lot to offer and with a local guide you have ample
time to explore the island and learn of of it's history (see the activity
page for all the options). We usually spend at least two nights up north
on the beaches and of course you may arrange to stay longer after your trip
ends.
Day 14: Trip end
We transfer by shuttle from the north back to Stone Town and the airport
and say farewell to this tropical paradise and Africa, hoping that the bug
has now bitten you and you will return.
This trip can be run in reverse, starting on Zanzibar and finishing in Malawi or continuing on to Zambia or Zimbabwe (see our other trip options for details).
